When It Would’ve Been Easier to Walk Away
I was in a rough part of El Centro for work and stopped at a gas station just as the sun was setting. There was a man in a wheelchair causing a scene—loud, angry, and harassing the employee, who was there alone. She looked scared and overwhelmed, unsure of what to do.
Two other customers kept their heads down, filled up, and left. I thought about doing the same—it would’ve been easier. But something in me told me to stay. In that moment, I felt like Jade was right there with me, nudging me to step out of my comfort zone and choose kindness anyway.
I walked over to her and gently suggested she call 911, letting her know I’d stay with her until help arrived. The relief on her face was immediate.
While we waited, we started talking, and I could tell she was doing her best just to get by. I had a $50 Visa gift card in my wallet, along with a Live Like Jade kindness card, and I gave them to her.
She broke down in tears.
In that moment, I felt it so clearly—that choosing to show up for someone, even when it’s uncomfortable or a little scary, is what it means to live like Jade. And I truly believe she was with me in that moment.
